Description
This is a barn located immediately to the east of East Quither Farmhouse, dating from the early 18th century, with an undershot water wheel in a pit on one side, likely added in the late 19th century. The barn is constructed from stone rubble and has a hipped corrugated asbestos roof at both ends. It features a large entrance on the front right under a timber lintel and a second entrance on the front left, which is sheltered by a corrugated iron canopy. The installation of the large water wheel has resulted in the blocking of two entrances on the east side. The wheel, marked "Langdon of Launceston" on its metal rim, has timber spokes. Adjoining the barn is a tall square stone pier that supported the leat aqueduct. Inside, the barn retains pegged tie beam and collar trusses with two tiers of original purlins. The gearing from the wheel is still present, suggesting that the wheel was likely used as a power source for the manganese mining industry in Quither during the 19th century.
