Description

The Homestead is a house dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century, with alterations made in the late 19th century. It is constructed of painted stone rubble, rendered on the sides and rear, and features a slate-hung first floor at the front. The roof is covered with asbestos tiles, has gabled ends, and is topped with later red crested ridge tiles. The gable-end stacks are rendered and have louvered yellow clay pots.

The house has a two-room layout with a central cross-passage plan, including unheated service rooms and stairs located in an integral outshut at the rear. It stands two storeys tall and has a symmetrical three-bay south front, with a slate-hung first floor. The windows are 19th-century two-light casements with glazing bars, and there is a central doorway featuring the original two-panel door, accompanied by a modest 20th-century open porch. At the rear, the roof extends down to the lower eaves of the outshut.

Inside, the house has seen little alteration since the 19th century. The ground floor rooms are fitted with slate floors. The kitchen and parlour both have fireplaces with Victorian chimneypieces, with the kitchen also featuring an iron range. The parlour includes two china cupboards with shaped shelves and paneled doors. The dairy at the back is equipped with slate shelves, and there are 18th-century fielded two-panel doors throughout. The east chamber has a fireplace with a simple late Georgian chimneypiece and a Victorian grate. The original lapped and pegged collar trusses remain, although some common rafters and purlins have been replaced. The Homestead is an unspoilt example of a small late Georgian vernacular house.
