Description
South Hill Farmhouse, also known as Twenty Acres, is a small farmhouse dating from the mid or late 17th century, with a late 19th-century extension. The older section is constructed of plastered cob on stone rubble footings, featuring a cob or stone rubble stack and a thatched roof. The 19th-century addition is built of brick, with a brick stack and a slate roof.
The farmhouse has a two-room plan facing south. The left room is the original part, which appears to have been a one-room plan cottage with a projecting gable-end stack on the left (west) side. The right (east) end features a mid or late 19th-century one-room plan extension with a gable-end stack. The building is two storeys high and has a 20th-century outshot at the rear.
The exterior presents a nearly symmetrical three-window front, featuring 20th-century casements with glazing bars, despite the differing wall materials. The central doorway contains a 20th-century plank door, while the former doorway on the left side has been replaced by a ground floor window. The roof is gable-ended.
Inside the 17th-century room, there is a large soffit-chamfered crossbeam, and the rubble fireplace is topped with a soffit-chamfered oak lintel. The roof was not inspected.
