Description
The gate posts and gates located approximately 140 metres south-east of Wood House were built between 1899 and 1905 by Thomas Mawson. They serve as an entrance between a farm drive and landscaped gardens. The gate posts are made of granite ashlar and have a square shape with chamfered plinths and soffit-moulded flat caps. The double gates are mounted on wrought iron piers and feature a fall height design with a double lockbar decorated with scrolls. The gates also include dograils with arrowhead designs, and alternating twisted rails. Additional decorative elements include fleur-de-lys and scroll ornaments, as well as ornate central crestwork resembling an overthrow. This gateway is part of a larger landscaping project designed by Mawson to accompany the rebuilding of Wood House, which he regarded as one of his major achievements.
