Description

Blackworthy Farmhouse is a farmhouse with medieval origins, primarily dating to the 17th century, with a 20th-century addition. The building features plastered rubble and cob walls and has a gable-ended thatched roof with two brick end stacks. Originally, it had a three-room-and-through-passage plan, but the lower end on the left has been reduced to an outshut. The hall stack backs onto the passage, and the presence of smoke-blackened rafters in the roof indicates that the house originally had an open hall, with the stack being a 17th-century addition. A spiral staircase located at the rear of the hall stack may also date from the 17th century.

The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical front that has two windows featuring 20th-century three-light casements, with the ground floor windows being taller. There is a corrugated iron lean-to against the left-hand end wall, which has a 17th-century plank door on its front wall. To the right of this lean-to is a similar door with decorative strap hinges that leads to the passage.

Inside, the hall fireplace has a lightly chamfered wooden lintel and an oven on the left side. The remains of a cream oven can be seen in the front wall next to the fireplace. The interior also features a chamfered axial ceiling beam and two cross beams at the front, which have pyramid stops. The inner room contains a roughly chamfered cross beam with straight cut stops. The roof structure is likely from the 18th century, consisting of simple pegged straight principals and a collar, although it reuses some smoke-blackened battens. Overall, this house has been minimally affected by 20th-century modernization and retains an attractive traditional facade.
