Description
This sundial, located approximately 110 metres south of Wood House, was created between 1899 and 1905 by Thomas Mawson. It is made of granite ashlar with a rusticated finish and features a slightly tapering octagonal shaft that rests on a moulded plinth and a two-step base. Around the top of the shaft, there is a carved Latin quotation beneath a dentil frieze, and a brass sundial is set into the flat-topped cap.
Originally situated in the lower circular lawn of the formal terraced garden southeast of Wood House, this sundial is an integral part of a comprehensive landscaping scheme designed by Mawson to accompany the rebuilding of Wood House. Mawson regarded this entire project as one of his major accomplishments.
