Description
This is a chimney stack located at the manure and vitriol works, built around the mid-19th century. It is constructed of stone rubble with some granite quoins and stands tall, measuring about 2.3 metres square at the base and tapering towards the top. The chimney is attached at the base on its south side to another building that is not included in the listing.
To the east, Town Mill is mentioned in the Domesday Book and by the mid-17th century, there were two mills, a wheat mill and a rye mill, situated side by side. In the 19th century, William Wood took over the mill, reconstructing and enlarging it to establish a fertiliser business, a bone crushing plant, and a condenser for producing sulphuric acid. The acid was originally pumped through a pipe under Simmons Park to the station, but this was abandoned after the pipe broke, causing unpleasant smells in the town.
