Description
The Bedford Hotel, located on Plymouth Road, comprises an east end dating to circa 1725 and a west end added in the mid-19th century. The east end was originally constructed as a dwelling house by Jacob Saunders, built on the site of monastic buildings that lay south of the Cloisters of Tavistock Abbey. It is built of stone ashlar, five bays in width, and has two storeys and a basement. Around 1820, the exterior was altered to incorporate castellated parapets and mullioned and transomed windows, replacing the original 18th-century sash windows. The interior of this section retains an early 18th-century panelled dining hall and staircase. The west end, constructed in a matching style of stone ashlar with a crenellated parapet and a crenellated porch, was added by the Bedford estate when the building was converted into a hotel in the mid-19th century. This section has six bays and some slate-hanging to the rear elevation, and is three storeys high.
