Description
The Abbey Chapel Forecourt Wall and Piers, originally known as the Unitarian Chapel, dates from the late 15th century or early 16th century. It was originally the Abbot's Hall but has been used as a non-conformist chapel since the 17th century. The building is constructed of granite and features a west end gable front with saddlestone. It has a double pointed arched window with a hood moulding and a 16th-century granite entrance arch that also has a hood moulding and carved spandrels. On the south wall, there are buttresses, an external chimney, and an original window that is now blocked. The granite forecourt wall is attached and includes two sets of rusticated gatepiers topped with ball finials. The original medieval roof is believed to be hidden beneath the coved plaster ceiling.
