Description
Nichols Nymet House is a country house that was previously a hotel, dated 1816 with later 19th-century additions. The building features rendered stone rubble walls with rusticated stucco quoins at the front and has a shallow pitched hipped slate roof with wide overhanging eaves. There are two rendered axial stacks that are symmetrically placed.
The house has a double depth plan, with rooms arranged around a central large stair hall. The principal rooms are located at the front and side, while service rooms are at the rear, including a kitchen behind the left-hand front room. The later 19th-century additions are at the rear and left-hand side.
The exterior is two storeys high with a symmetrical three-window front, showcasing original hornless sash windows—20 panes on the ground floor and 16:12:16 panes on the first floor, with the central window featuring an arched head. The central section is slightly recessed and includes original double part-glazed doors topped by a semi-circular fanlight, all beneath an open-fronted verandah-type porch supported by slender iron pillars. The two outer sections have splayed corners, and the left-hand section displays an inscribed date-stone of 1816. The right-hand elevation features a two-storey hipped roof porch with 19th-century glazed doors, along with later 19th-century lean-tos at the rear.
Inside, the entrance hall features three tall arches at the rear supported by wooden columns, with the central and wider arch positioned over the staircase. The original staircase has an open string, square balusters, and turned newels. The former kitchen includes a large open fireplace.
