Description

The Old Rectory is a house, dating to around the early 19th century, with later 19th-century extensions. It is built of rendered stone rubble with a slate roof, gabled at the left-hand end and hipped at the rear of the rear wing. The front block has two rendered brick stacks, one at the left end and one axial. A similar axial stack is present at the rear block, and a brick stack is at the gable end of a single-storey addition. Originally, the house had an L-shaped plan. The front range, of single depth, consists of one room on either side of a stairhall slightly to the left of centre. The right-hand wing is double depth, with a large room facing onto the ground and service rooms to the rear. A further extension was made later in the 19th century, adding an outshut behind the left-hand side of the front range and additional service rooms at that end. The front facade is almost symmetrical, with a three-window arrangement of early 19th-century hornless sash windows. The first floor has 16 panes in each window, except for the left-hand window which is smaller with nine panes. The ground floor windows have 12 panes, with a pair of early 19th-century doors with marginal glazing slightly to the left of centre. The right-hand front of the wing presents a similar appearance, featuring 12-pane hornless sashes and a blind window at the centre of the first floor. Later additions are present at the left-hand end, and an outshut is located at the rear. Inside, the staircase at the rear of the hall has a closed string, stick balusters, and column newels. There is a simple arch in the hall leading to the staircase and to the two right-hand rooms. Some original panelled shutters remain in the principal rooms.
