Description

Town Barton is a farmhouse that likely dates from the late 16th century to early 17th century, although all early internal features are hidden. It was extended and altered in the 19th century. The building is constructed from rendered stone rubble and cob walls, topped with a gable-ended slate roof. The right-hand side features scantle slates, while there is a slightly projecting rubble stack on the left gable end, a large rendered rubble axial stack, and a 19th-century axial brick stack.

Originally, the farmhouse had a three-room-and-through-passage layout, with the lower end on the right. The hall was heated by a stack that backed onto the passage and had a shallow projecting hall bay at the front. The inner room was heated by a gable end stack, while the lower room was apparently unheated until a gable end stack was added in the 19th century. It seems that during this time, the building was extended at the lower end with an out-building. Later 19th-century outshuts were added at the rear of the left-hand end. In the 19th century, original features were covered up, and the hall was subdivided with a staircase inserted at the rear.

The farmhouse is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical four-window front featuring late 19th-century or early 20th-century casements. These are mostly three-light, except for the first-floor window to the left of centre, which is a single light. There is a shallow hall projection to the left of centre, and to the right of centre, there is a late 19th-century or early 20th-century gabled brick porch with a 19th-century panelled and part-glazed door behind it. An outbuilding extension from the 19th century is located at the right-hand end, along with an outshut at the rear.

Inside, no early features are visible, but it is likely that beams and open fireplaces are concealed. The feet of the principal rafters are not visible in the first-floor rooms, suggesting that the roof trusses are not early.
