Description

Winsford Hospital is a small hospital built between 1899 and 1900 by architect C.F.A. Voysey. The building features rendered walls with stone window dressings and a slate roof that is hipped at the left end and gabled at the right, with three gables at the front and two at the rear. It has seven rendered stacks, all axial except for a front lateral stack towards the left end. The original layout remains largely unchanged, with an entrance hall located to the right of the center, leading to a corridor at the rear of the building that opens into several small front rooms.

At the rear, two small wings project towards either end, with a 20th-century sun-lounge constructed between them. The front of the building is asymmetrical, featuring 16 windows with 1, 2, and 3 light mullions. To the right of the entrance is a large gable, with a smaller gable above the entrance and another large gable adjacent to it. The two larger gables extend into small wings at the rear. The front door is partially glazed, accompanied by a 2-light window under the gable to its left, which also bears a plaque commemorating the founding of the hospital by Maria Medley in 1900.

The interior of the hospital is very well preserved, showcasing original features such as plank doors with wrought iron strap hinges, decorative ventilation grills, and chimney-pieces. One chimney-piece in the hall is carved with coats of arms, including that of its benefactress, while another features an inverted heart design. This building is a rare example in Devon of a Voysey design that continues to serve its original purpose and remains largely unaltered.
