Description

Logs Cottage is a house that likely has medieval origins, with alterations from the late 16th century or early 17th century and renovations in the 20th century. The building is constructed of whitewashed rendered cob and features a thatched roof with gables at both ends. A large stone stack is located on the ridge, accompanied by thatch weatherings and a rendered stack at the right gable end. It is said that the roof timbers at the higher end of the stack are smoke-blackened, although access to these was not available during the survey in 1985. The cottage may have originally been a medieval open hall house, with a stack added to the through passage in the late 16th or early 17th century. At that time, the lower end may have been rebuilt to include accommodation above a byre or storage space. The front of the hall is slightly advanced to the left of the stack.

The layout consists of three rooms and a through passage, with a single-storey lean-to addition at the rear. The cottage is two storeys high and has a three-window front with the entrance located on the right side. On the first floor, there are two three-light casements at the higher end, each with three panes per light, and a similar two-light casement to the right of the stack. On the ground floor, the left window is a six-pane sash, while the other two ground floor windows are two-light casements, each with six panes per light. Inside, there is a chamfered stopped timber lintel above the fireplace, and the lower end features a cobbled floor beneath cement. There are also two large pegged trusses at the lower end, which do not have collars and were originally designed with a diagonally-set ridge. The cottage was formerly known as Downs View.
