Description
A house and adjoining barn date from the early 17th century, with alterations and a refronting in the mid-18th century. The house is constructed of dressed slate stone with a moulded stone plinth to the original cross wing, and stone rubble to the rear projections. The main range has an ashlar slate stone front with a moulded granite plinth. The roofs are of slate structure, with four trusses removed.
The main range has gabled ends, and the cross wing has a projecting gable end with a staircase projection set at right angles. A stone rubble stack with a slate string is in the left-hand gable end of the main range, while a rear lateral stack has a brick shaft. The cross wing also has a lateral stone rubble stack with slate strings, incorporated into the gabled rear wing of the staircase projection.
The earlier range on the south forms the cross wing, protruding from the north-west gable end of the main range. The cross wing likely contained the hall, a rear lateral stack for heating, a stair projection, and service rooms to the east. The main range was remodelled and re-fronted in the mid-18th century, with a two-room and cross-passage plan. The left-hand room (west) is heated by an end stack, and the right-hand room (east) by a rear lateral stack.
The main range has a two-storey, three-window symmetrical south front. The ground floor has two large rectangular openings, likely for sashes, with dressed stone arches. A central entrance has a round dressed stone arch. Above are the remains of three 16-pane sashes, without horns, with moulded exposed sash boxes. The cross wing has a six-light granite, chamfered mullioned hall window with a hoodmould.
The interior of the main range has been gutted, with a brick arch to a partly blocked fireplace in the left-hand gable end, and a large deep slate lintel to the fireplace of the rear lateral stack. Ceiling beams and the first floor have been removed. A circa 17th century ovolo-moulded timber lintel remains on the first floor of the left-hand gable end. Four roof trusses with straight feet remain, with cambered, lapped and pegged collars. One truss has holes for threaded purlins and is morticed at the apex. The hall fireplace in the wing has a low, chamfered granite lintel and granite jambs, with a higher timber lintel above. The gable end of the wing contains the remains of a truss, possibly with curved feet and morticed at the apex. A later circa 19th century stair is located in the projecting wing. A full interior inspection of the rear staircase wing was not possible.
Adjoining the south gable end of the cross wing is a single-storey and two-storey stone rubble barn with a corrugated asbestos roof. The two-storey gable end has two possibly reset, circa 17th century small chamfered granite rectangular window openings. A door is set beneath a segmental arch, and there is a rectangular, chamfered granite surround to a two-light window in the gable end, with the mullion removed. Two rows of pigeon holes are present, and the wing is believed to contain a timber screw cider press. The interior of the barn was not inspected.
