Description

SX 38 SE BRADSTONE

5/4 Barn directly to south of Bradstone Millhouse

  • II

House, later probably used for some industrial purpose with water wheel added on right-hand side wall. Now used as barn for sheep with hayloft above. Circa C17. Extended on left-hand gable end in circa late C17. Cob and stone rubble with rag slate roof to front slope. Corrugated iron roof over rag slates on rear and corrugated iron roof to right-hand hipped end. Slightly shallower pitch to rag slate roof of extension on left-hand gable end. Chimney stacks removed. Probably 2 room and cross passage plan. Unheated lower room on right. Hall on left of passage heated by end stack. With addition of third room at higher end of hall, the hall stack became an axial stack and a second end stack was added on left-hand gable end to heat the inner room, probably a parlour. Probably in circa late C18, a water wheel was built on the right-hand side wall. The leat ran along the rear of the building and was carried by means of a launder to the overshot wheel. The central range of the building was probably used for some industrial purpose indicated by greasy smoke-blackening of both the ceiling beams and roof timbers. 2 storeys. Left-hand extension set slightly forward. Ground floor with 2 plank door openings and third entrance to right of centre with circa C17 moulded timber door frame with carpenters mitres. Wall to right, set slightly back with small rectangular window. First floor with loft door in left-hand extension, half-dormer beneath sloping roof, opening with shutters and square opening to right. In right- hand hipped end, later door opening on ground floor with granite lintel. Evidence of wheel removed. Interior. Small granite lintels to fireplace on left-hand gable end and above hall fireplace. Heavy ceiling beams, slightly chamfered with smoke blackening. Later floor boards, possibly mid C19, clean. Roof of 8 bays. First 2 trusses, on left in extension, replaced in circa late C19. 5 trusses to main range circa C17. Straight principals, morticed at apex and resting on timber wall plate, partly removed slightly cambered collars, dovetailed into principals with trenched purlins and diagonally set ridge. Third, fourth and fifth principals smoke blackening in dovetail hole. Seventh principal partly smoke blackened. Paired with later clean rafters and later clean collar which has been lapped and pegged.
