Description
The gate posts and gates located approximately 350 metres south-west of Wood House were constructed between 1899 and 1905 by Thomas Mawson. They serve as the main entrance to the drive leading to Wood House. The structure features granite ashlar with some roughcast brick or stone rubble, along with wrought iron gates.
The gateway is slightly set back from the road to the west. The granite ashlar gate posts are square in shape, with chamfered plinths and caps that are moulded on the soffit. These posts are topped with obelisks that have wrought iron fleur-de-lys finials. The gate piers and the full-height double gates are made of wrought iron, featuring double lock bars and top rails adorned with scrollwork. The gate piers also have scrolled finials, and the centre of the gateway showcases an ornate crest resembling an overthrow. Each gate's top panel includes a heraldic device encased in a circular frame.
On either side of the gate posts, a wall extends outward and then turns at an angle, projecting both forwards and outwards. This wall consists of roughcast panels framed by rusticated granite ashlar. In front, there is a low quadrant fence made of plain granite posts with iron rails in between.
This gateway is part of the extensive landscaped garden scheme designed by Mawson, which accompanied the rebuilding of Wood House. Mawson regarded the entire scheme as one of his major accomplishments.
