Description
The building is a barn, originally the kitchen for a vicarage, located approximately 60 metres north-north-west of The Garden House. It dates from the early 16th century and features stone rubble walls with a gable-ended thatched roof, which is hipped over a stair projection.
This barn was once part of a larger complex, mostly demolished, that served as the former vicarage. The structure includes a large ground floor room with a massive fireplace at the gable end and a newel stair in a projection on the front wall leading to an upper room. The presence of slit windows at the gable end indicates that the building may have been converted to a barn, and its use certainly changed to that of a barn from the late 18th century onwards. At some point, the floor of the first-floor room was removed.
The barn is originally a single storey but was designed for two. Its front is asymmetrical, featuring a large stair projection to the right of centre with a curved front wall and straight side walls, which includes a hollow chamfered granite framed light. To the right of the stair projection on the first floor is a similar light, while to the left on the ground floor is a wide doorway with 20th-century plank doors, likely an enlargement of the original entrance. There are also two slit openings at the right-hand gable end, which are obscured by foliage.
Inside, the massive fireplace in the left-hand gable end occupies almost the full width of the room and has a chamfered dressed granite arch, now supported at the centre by a later stone pier. There are two stone ovens on the left side. A square-headed granite doorway with a double chamfer leads to the stone newel stairs, and the roof structure is a 20th-century king post design.
