Heath Farmhouse

NORTHLEW SX 59 NW 9/218 Heath Farmhouse - GV II Farmhouse. Circa late C16 partly rebuilt in C19 or C20. Ashlar front wall with chamfered plinth, the left-hand end of it is rendered. Rendered, probably rubble, walls at rear. Gable ended slate roof. Slightly projecting rendered stack at right gable end, ashlar axial stack with dripmoulds and tapering cap with brick shaft. Plan: originally 3-room-and-through-passage plan with contemporary or slightly later rear wing. Lower end to the left has been completely rebuilt as a shippon, probably in C19 or earlier C20. The hall stack backs onto the passage and there is a newel stair to the rear of the higher end of the hall. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 2-window front, left-nand end of which is slighly recessed. On the ground floor are 2 original 4-light rebated stone mullion windows from which the outer 2 mullions have been removed leaving the moulded king- mullion. Square hoodmoulds above. Otherwise C20 1, 2, and 3-light small-paned casements. C19 plank door to passage to left marks the start of the lower roof-line to the rebuilt left-hand end. Rear wing behind right-hand end. Interior: hall has chamfered, unstopped axial ceiling beam. Stone newel stairs at the rear of the room. Adjoining it is a moulded peaked head doorframe to the rear wing. The rear wing has a chamfered cross beam with long pyramid stops. Roof trusses inaccessible at time of survey but may be of interest. Other features such as fireplaces are also likely to be concealed. Despite its modest size this interesting house was evidently built to high standards.
