Description
Heath Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 16th century, with parts rebuilt in the 19th or 20th century. The front wall is made of ashlar with a chamfered plinth, while the left end is rendered. The rear walls are rendered, likely from rubble. The roof is gable-ended and covered with slate. There is a slightly projecting rendered stack at the right gable end and an ashlar axial stack featuring dripmoulds and a tapering cap with a brick shaft.
The original layout was a three-room-and-through-passage plan, with a contemporary or slightly later rear wing. The lower end on the left has been completely rebuilt as a shippon, likely in the 19th or early 20th century. The hall stack is positioned against the passage, and there is a newel stair located at the rear of the higher end of the hall.
The exterior is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical two-window front, with the left end slightly recessed. On the ground floor, there are two original four-light rebated stone mullion windows, although the outer two mullions have been removed, leaving the moulded king-mullion. Above these windows are square hoodmoulds. The remaining windows are modern, with one, two, and three-light small-paned casements. A 19th-century plank door to the passage on the left indicates the start of the lower roof-line of the rebuilt left-hand end. The rear wing is located behind the right-hand end.
Inside, the hall features a chamfered, unstopped axial ceiling beam and stone newel stairs at the rear of the room. There is a moulded peaked head doorframe leading to the rear wing, which has a chamfered cross beam with long pyramid stops. The roof trusses were inaccessible during the survey but may be of interest, and other features such as fireplaces are likely concealed. Despite its modest size, this house was evidently built to high standards.
