Description

Durdon Farmhouse is probably of mid to later 17th century origin, although no original internal features are visible to date it. It is constructed of plastered rubble and cob walls, with a thatched gable roof that extends in a catslide fashion at the rear over an outshut. Two brick stacks are located in the gable ends. The original plan appears to have been a three-room-and-through-passage layout, with a lower room to the left. The central room lacks a fireplace, making its original use unclear. The outshut runs along the rear wall, and while it may be original, it is more likely to be from the 18th century. A 20th-century staircase has been inserted into the passage.

The exterior presents an asymmetrical three-window front. Most windows are early 20th-century, three-light casements, except for a small-paned casement on the ground floor to the right and a first-floor window to the right of centre, which are from the 19th century. A 20th-century lean-to porch with a panelled and glazed door is located to the left of centre. A row of pigeon holes is situated below the eaves to the right of centre. Attached at the left-hand end is an 18th-century outbuilding, featuring a corrugated iron roof, a door at its right-hand end, and a ventilation slit in the centre.

The interior contains no visible original features, although beams and open fireplaces may have been concealed by later alterations. The feet of the trusses are not visible on the first floor, suggesting that the roof timbers are unlikely to be original. The house has undergone little alteration since the early 20th century.
