Description

The Downicarey Methodist Church and adjoining schoolroom date from the early 19th century. The church is built of stone rubble with a slate roof, and the schoolroom adjoins it to the south east, featuring a rendered chimney. The church is unusually small, with Gothic style windows.

The church has a two-bay plan. A small gabled porch is on the left, with a doorway on the right side and a blocked pointed window on the front, both with painted architraves. To the right of the porch is a three-light pointed window with glazing bars, also featuring a painted architrave. Two similar windows are found at the rear of the chapel. The schoolroom, with a lower roofline, has a separate entrance on the front, and a single three-light casement window with three panes per light, and a painted architrave.

Inside the church, the early 19th century roof trusses feature tie beams, queen struts with pendants, curved braces springing from a moulded wallplate. A simple rostrum has blind Gothic arcading and arcaded railings. The church also includes rectangular bench ends. A circular central ventilator in the ceiling has a plaster moulding.
