Description

Shepherds Barn is a house that likely dates from the 18th century or earlier, with a late 19th-century addition on the left side and a late 20th-century addition on the right. The building is constructed from whitewashed rendered cob and features a thatched roof that is hipped at the left end and gabled at the right. The late 20th-century addition on the right is made of concrete block with an asbestos slate roof. There are rendered stacks at both the right end of the main range and along the ridge.

The house is positioned at right angles to the road and was probably originally designed as a two-room plan with end stacks. In the late 19th century, it was extended by adding one unheated room to the left end, along with a lean-to at the rear left. The internal partitions have been modified over time.

The building is two storeys high and has a symmetrical two-window arrangement, with a one-window addition on the left. It features a late 20th-century thatched stone rubble porch and modern windows, including a French window in the left addition.

Inside, there is direct entry into the main room, which contains a large fireplace with stone rubble jambs, a plain lintel, and two cloam ovens. The left-hand heated room also features a large fireplace with a cambered timber lintel. During renovations, some evidence of what may have been a newel stair was discovered in the left-hand room. The roof has 18th-century trusses with halved pegged collars and an X-apex, which are visible beneath a later roof.
