Description
Elmsleigh Farmhouse is a farmhouse with origins dating to the late 17th century, which was remodeled in the 18th century. It is constructed of colourwashed rendered cob on stone rubble footings, topped with an asbestos slate roof that is gabled at the left end and half-hipped at the right end, featuring two rendered axial stacks. The original layout likely consisted of a three-room and passage house, with the hall stack positioned against the passage and an unheated lower end. The 18th-century remodeling likely involved the removal of the lower end wall of the passage, allowing for a new entrance directly into the hall, which created a symmetrical appearance between the stacks. An addition at the left end may have originally served as a woodstore with an apple loft above.
The farmhouse is two storeys high and has a five-window front with regular fenestration and a symmetrical elevation between the stacks, with the range slightly set back to the left of the left-hand stack. There is a central gabled porch featuring a round-headed outer doorway, and a second entrance to the right under a slate canopy supported by timber brackets, which may represent the original passage doorway. The left-hand addition has a separate entrance on the front. The windows are sash style throughout, with 20-pane sashes located between the stacks, a 12-pane sash above the porch, a 16-pane sash on the ground floor to the right, and paired 12-pane sashes on the first floor to the right. Early interior features may be concealed behind the plaster, and the roof space has not been inspected.
