Description
The gatehouse located approximately 15 meters southeast of Weare Giffard Hall is a Grade I listed structure dating from the late 15th century. It is built from coursed slatestone rubble and features a crenellated parapet above a plain string course. The gatehouse has two storeys and includes a label mould over a late 15th-century two-light window with cinquefoiled round-arched heads, which is flanked by relief-carved heraldic shields.
There is a hood mould over a moulded basket-arched gateway, which contains late 15th-century panelled and studded double doors. Each door panel is adorned with relief-carved lozenges and carved lions rampant at the top. The side walls have similar windows, which were restored in the early 19th century. The rear of the gatehouse features similar early 19th-century windows above another late 15th-century gateway. Inside, there is a mid-19th-century panelled door set within an early 17th-century ovolo-moulded wood architrave.
