Description
Mill House, formerly known as Orleigh Mill, is a house that dates from the late 17th century, with possible earlier origins. A cross wing was added to the left in the mid to late 18th century, and an early 19th-century range was added to the right. The central 17th-century house features colourwashed render over cob and stone, while the 18th and 19th-century extensions are made of rendered coursed slatestone rubble. The building has a gabled slate roof, with a 17th-century lateral stack at the front made of rendered stone and a mid-19th-century brick ridge stack.
The original 17th-century house has a two-unit plan that was extended to form an L-plan in the 18th century. The early 19th-century two-storey range to the right is symmetrical with three windows and has segmental stone arches over a plank door and late 19th-century plate-glass sashes. The central 17th-century two-storey range features flat rendered arches over a 20th-century window above a late 19th-century plate-glass sash. The gable end of the 18th-century wing to the left has a late 19th-century plate-glass sash above a segmental stone arch over a two-light casement, and there is a late 19th-century four-panelled door, two of which are glazed, in the right side wall. An outshut to the left contains an 18th-century plank door set in a chamfered wood frame. There is also a 17th-century stair outshut at the rear.
Inside, the cross wing to the left features an 18th-century plank door leading into the front room. There is a stop-chamfered 17th-century beam and 17th-century newel stairs at the rear. The interior also includes two A-frame trusses, each with trenched purlins and ridge purlins set in notched apexes.
