Description
Brendon Farmhouse and the adjoining farmbuilding are located in Halwill and date back to the 17th century or earlier. The farmhouse is constructed of cob on stone rubble footings, with a whitewashed and rendered front and an asbestos slate roof that is gabled at both ends; it was formerly thatched. There is a rendered axial stack that heats the hall and a projecting right end stack with a stone shaft. The layout consists of three rooms and a passage, with the lower end serving as a farmbuilding that has a loft above. The hall stack is positioned against the passage, and the inner room is heated. Additions to the structure, including a rear outshut and a front hall projection, likely date from the 18th century.
The building is two storeys high and features an asymmetrical four-window front. A 20th-century front door leads into the passage on the left, while the hall projection is gabled at the front in the center. The windows consist of 20th-century casements with glazing bars, arranged in two- and three-light configurations. The adjoining farmbuilding on the left end has a doorway on the front beneath a loft entrance.
Inside, the hall showcases 17th-century chamfered stopped ceiling beams and a fireplace with granite jambs and a timber lintel, which is supported by projecting corbels with rounded profiles. A doorway to the left of the fireplace leads to a staircase that may date from the 17th or 18th century. The roof space has not been inspected but may hold additional historical interest.
