Description

This is a cottage located at 89 High Street in Clovelly, dating from the mid-19th century but likely built on an earlier site. It was altered in 1916 by Christine Hamlyn. The building is constructed of rubble, partly rendered and entirely whitewashed, with a gable-ended slate roof and a brick stack on the left side.

The cottage has a single room depth layout, featuring a central entrance hall with a staircase, flanked by rooms, and an additional room positioned at right angles to the front. The exterior is two storeys high with a 2:1 bay arrangement. The left two bays contain two-light 12-pane casements on either side of a central door opening, which features a 19th-century plank door. The gabled roof has a slate covering and a fretwork bargeboard, with wooden latticework on the sides. There is another door opening to the right, also with a plank door. Additionally, there is a room that projects at right angles from the right side of the building on the first floor, extending across the alleyway in front of the cottage and attached to the rear of No. 95. This room is supported on nine beams and has a 12-pane two-light casement on the north side.

The interior has not been inspected. The source of this information is a private archive at Clovelly Court.
