Description
This gateway, located approximately 2 metres south of South Lodge, was formerly part of the south drive to Stevenstone House and dates from around 1870. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar and local stone rubble. The gateway features a tall pair of gate piers that are square in section, with chamfered plinths and moulded caps, each topped with the Rolle arms carved in limestone. On the inner sides of the piers, there are engaged pilasters that are adorned with carved acanthus scrolls beneath the capitals. The outer sides also display similar acanthus scrolls on top of the flanking outer walls, which rise to support the scrolls. The original timber gates remain in place, providing access for both pedestrian and carriageway traffic.
