Description

The Magazine and attached privies, located about 15 metres northeast of the Fog Signal Battery on Lundy, were built around 1861 for Trinity House. Constructed from dressed granite, the building features a gabled roof, with the privies now roofless and the magazine topped with a barrel-vaulted brick roof covered in slate. The overall layout is rectangular, consisting of two privies on the east side and a wider, approximately square magazine on the west side.

The exterior is single-storey with two symmetrical gables facing the path leading down to the Battery. Under the right gable are two privy doors, while the left gable has a doorway leading to the magazine, all featuring granite lintels. The structure is set on a battered stone plinth at the cliff edge, with its back facing the sea.

Inside, the W.C.s have been removed from the privies. The magazine is lined with brick, has a brick barrel-vaulted roof, and includes a ventilation hole in the rear gable.

Historically, the Old Lighthouse, situated 470 feet above sea level, was often obscured by fog. To address this issue, the fog signal battery was constructed around 1861 on the cliffs below, which included cottages for the gunners and this magazine and privies. In 1878, Trinity House replaced the guns with guncotton rockets, and by 1881, there were discussions about moving the lower light of the Old Lighthouse to the Battery. Various signaling methods, including bells, hooters, and whistles, were tried, but both the Old Lighthouse and Battery were eventually abandoned in 1897 when the North and South Lundy Lighthouses were built.
