Description
HIGH BICKINGTON SS 62 SW 5/87 Barn and adjoining horse-engine - house approximately 10 metres to north-west of Southwood Farmhouse

Barn and adjoining horse-engine house. Mid to late C19, with some minor C20 alterations. Uncoursed stone rubble with gable-ended Welsh-slate roof. Engine house of stone rubble and cob walls and gable-ended roof with late C20 covering. Plan: Barn aligned approximately north-east/south-west, facing farmyard to south- east. Opposed central court entrances and square-ended horse-engine house projecting to front at the right-hand end, with 3-bay open left-hand side (partly blocked in the late C20). Exterior: The cart entrances have pairs of large plank doors (one 2-leaf) with wooden lintels. The south-west entrance has a shallow porch with short flanking stone walls and lean-to slate roof. The formerly open left-hand side of the engine house was partly blocked in the late C20 with 2-light wooden casements inserted in the end bays but with square piers flanking the still open centre bay. Interior: C19 five-bay barn roof with trusses consisting of straight principals and lap-jointed collars; and 2 pairs of purlins. C20 roof to engine house. The barn and horse-engine house form part of a farmstead group which also includes Southwood Farmhouse and the adjoining farmbuildings (q.q.v.).
