Description

The barn and adjoining horse-engine house, located approximately 10 metres northwest of Southwood Farmhouse, date from the mid to late 19th century and have undergone some minor alterations in the 20th century. They are constructed from uncoursed stone rubble and feature a gable-ended roof covered with Welsh slate. The engine house has stone rubble and cob walls, topped with a gable-ended roof that has a late 20th-century covering.

The barn is aligned approximately northeast to southwest, facing the farmyard to the southeast. It has opposed central court entrances and a square-ended horse-engine house that projects to the front at the right-hand end. The left side of the barn has a three-bay open area, which has been partly blocked in the late 20th century.

On the exterior, the cart entrances are fitted with pairs of large plank doors, including one two-leaf door, and feature wooden lintels. The southwest entrance is enhanced by a shallow porch with short flanking stone walls and a lean-to slate roof. The formerly open left side of the engine house has been partly blocked in the late 20th century, with two-light wooden casements inserted in the end bays, while square piers flank the still open central bay.

Inside, the barn boasts a 19th-century five-bay roof supported by trusses with straight principals and lap-jointed collars, along with two pairs of purlins. The engine house has a 20th-century roof. Together, the barn and horse-engine house are part of a farmstead group that includes Southwood Farmhouse and the adjoining farm buildings.
