Description
Number 1 High Street and Church Gate is a building dating from 1735, featuring elements from the 18th century and mid-19th century. It is part of a range that extends onto the churchyard, with the old Sexton's Cottage next door listed separately along with outbuildings further west.
The High Street front of the building is three stories high with four windows. The upper stories slightly overhang and are likely timber-framed, finished in modern roughcast. The Georgian flush-frame sash windows originally had glazing bars that have since been removed. The long shop front has been altered but retains a dentil cornice and a scroll signboard above.
The section facing Church Gate, which overlooks the churchyard, is a two-story mid-19th century addition with three windows. It is finished in stucco and colourwashed, featuring a wood cornice with coupled brackets. The sash windows include one splayed bay, and there is a round-headed doorway topped with a steeply pitched pedimented hood supported by enriched consoles.
All the listed buildings along High Street contribute to a cohesive group.
