Description

Torridge House, which includes a garden wall adjoining to the west, is a house that was formerly a rectory. It dates from the mid-19th century, with a later addition from the 19th century. The building features plastered stone walls and a gable-ended slate roof, along with various rendered brick stacks.

The house has an irregular plan that has likely been extended at several points, but it primarily consists of two main front rooms separated by a stair hall, with a slightly later cross-wing on the right that contains a large drawing room. There is a kitchen wing at the rear of the left-hand end and service rooms behind the main rooms.

The exterior is two storeys high with an attic, showcasing an asymmetrical front. The left side has a symmetrical three-window range, while the right features a gabled cross-wing. The original windows include three-light sashes on the first floor and mullion and transom windows below, with the central window being a French door. The gable on the right has a three-light canted bay window on the ground floor, and all windows are framed with contrasting plastered architraves. A string course runs between the floors. There is a one-storey later 19th-century addition set back from the left-hand end, with the end of the rear panelled range projecting to its left. The rear elevation is very irregular, featuring two large gables on the left with 19th-century 12-pane and tripartite sash windows.

Inside, the house retains a fairly complete array of joinery and plasterwork, including six-panel doors and an open string staircase with a wreathed handrail and stick balusters. The main drawing room features a decorative ceiling band with an egg and dart cornice, while simple moulded cornices are found elsewhere. The property also includes a tall rendered garden wall to the west, which has a four-centred chamfered arch.
