Description

This building is a barn, now used as stables, along with an adjoining farmyard wall, located approximately 10 metres south-west of Old South Heale Farmhouse. It likely dates from the early 18th century and is constructed of cob on a stone rubble plinth, with the rear side rendered. The barn features a gable-ended slate roof, while the farmyard wall is made of stone rubble, incorporating some cob and topped with clay tiles.

The barn is aligned roughly north-south and has opposing cart entrances at the south end, forming the west boundary of the farmyard, which is situated opposite Old Heale Farmhouse. The adjoining curved wall encloses the farmyard to the north.

On the exterior, the east side features a cart entrance on the left with a wooden frame, although the doors are missing. Above this entrance, there is a row of five pigeon nesting holes with slate ledges. To the right, there is a small square window with a wooden frame. There is probably a later stone buttress to the left of the cart entrance. The rear cart entrance on the west side is partly blocked with stone. The farmyard wall to the north includes five cob bee boles and a gateway to the right.

Inside the barn, there is an early 18th-century four-bay roof made up of trusses with straight principals and halved collars. A 17th-century chamfered ceiling beam has been reused as a lintel over the rear cart entrance, featuring a straight cut end at the right-hand (north-end) and mortices for former joists, suggesting that the beam may have originated from the farmhouse or an earlier structure on the site.
