Description
Ebberly House is a country house that was rebuilt around 1816 by Henry Hole, possibly designed by Thomas Lee, on the site of an earlier house. It is constructed of stucco, likely over stone rubble, and features a slate hipped roof behind parapets, with a rendered stack topped with yellow clay pots. The house is designed in a Neo-Classical style and has a double depth plan with a central entrance, a wing at the right end, and a lower service wing at the back to the left.
The exterior is two storeys high and has a symmetrical south front with a 2:3:2 bay arrangement, divided by giant pilasters that support an entablature with a moulded cornice and blocking course. The first floor has large early 19th-century 16-pane sash windows, while the ground floor features early 19th-century French windows with margin glazing bars and decorative wrought-iron balconettes. The central doorway has glazed double doors and is framed by a large Doric stuccoed porch supported by two pairs of massive fluted columns. This porch is now glazed. The entablature continues around the sides, where there are semi-circular bays at each end with French windows on the first floor and iron balconies. The east elevation has sash windows with glazing bars, and the rear elevation is asymmetrically fenestrated with sash windows. A fine timber cupola, octagonal in shape with an ogee dome and finial, sits over the lower rear service wing.
The interior of Ebberly House appears to be very complete and features many interesting details, including a fine cantilevered staircase in a small oval well, intact joinery, plasterwork, and chimney pieces, two of which are located under windows.
