Description
Brownsham Cottage is a small house dating from the early 17th century, with a 19th-century addition. It features plastered rubble walls and a gable-ended scantle slate roof. There is a brick stack at the right gable end and a large plastered rubble lateral stack on the left side, which has a drip course and a tapering cap. The current layout consists of a two-room plan, with the left room heated by a fireplace on the front wall and the right room heated by the gable-end stack. The house likely originally extended further to the left, including a passage and a lower room, representing the hall and inner room of a three-room-and-through-passage house. The 19th-century wing is located at the rear of the left-hand room.
The exterior is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical front with two early 19th-century 16-pane hornless sash windows. To the left, there is a 19th-century plank door beneath a gabled slate door hood supported by curved wooden brackets. An oven projection with a slate roof is situated to the left of the lateral stack, and a long wing extends from the right-hand side at the rear.
Although the interior was not seen, occupants report that it contains heavy chamfered ceiling beams in the left-hand room. There are apparently no visible timbers in the first-floor rooms, and access to the roof space is not available. Brownsham Cottage retains a very unspoilt external appearance and is part of a traditional and picturesque hamlet.
