Description

Wooda is a detached house dating from the early or mid-19th century, possibly 1848. It has solid rendered walls and a hipped slate roof, with rendered chimneys symmetrically placed at each end of the ridge. The house is two storeys high, with a five-window front, the centre three windows slightly projected. Raised quoins are visible at each end of the front and flank the projection. Round-arched doorways are positioned at the left end of the projection and the far right-hand end of the front, each with moulded architraves featuring lion-head keystones. They are fitted with four-panelled doors – the left-hand door has a knocker – and fanlights with glazing-bars forming two Gothic arches. The windows have moulded architraves and six-paned sashes, although the left-hand second-storey window is blind. A deep, boxed eaves cornice runs along the building.

A square, rendered gate-pier, channelled to resemble rusticated ashlar, is attached to the right front corner of the house, topped with a stepped, three-tiered cap. The left side of the building has windows that match those at the front. The interior was not inspected. The property does not appear on the Bideford Tithe Map of 1841. A folly, which formerly stood within the grounds, is now a separate listed house called The Folly, New Road. A stone tablet discovered near The Folly bears the inscription “G.Richards. 1848.”
