Description
Rose Cottage is a farmhouse that has been converted into a cottage, dating from the 16th century or earlier. It is constructed of rendered stone rubble or cob and originally had a thatched roof, which has since been replaced with corrugated iron. The building is located between Balls Cottages on the left and Virginia Cottage on the right. It features a large tapered axial stack that is divided into two stages and has a three-room layout. The front of the cottage is irregular with four windows, which are modern (20th century) replacements. There are doorways on either side of the hearth position. Some of the walling has been partially rebuilt in the 20th century. A two-light arch-headed granite window is blocked between the left ground floor window and the second window.
Most of the internal structural features are hidden, but some remnants of the old roof structure are believed to remain, possibly including jointed crucks. A muntin and plank oak screen was removed in the 20th century, and there is said to be a shellet lined flue. The cottage is included in the listing for its group value.
