Description

Wayside is a house located on Rattle Street in Trusham, dating back to the 16th century. The building features rendered cob walls and an asbestos slate roof, which was formerly thatched. It has a brick chimney on the left gable end, a stone axial stack with weathering and a brick upper stage, and a stone lateral stack at the rear with a brick shaft on the right gable end. The house is part of a row and sits adjacent to Box Tree Cottage at a lower level.

The structure has a 3-room and through passage plan, although it is now configured as 2 rooms. The ground slopes down to the right, and the house is two storeys high with a four-window front facing northeast. The doorway is off-centre to the right, with a window to the left and two windows at a lower level on the right. There is a 20th-century window opening above the door, and all windows and the door are 20th-century casements. The window to the left of the door retains an old doorframe inside.

Inside, the building once featured a jointed cruck roof structure. A muntin and plank oak screen survives in the lower passage. The fireplace in the upper room, which serves as the hall, backs onto the other side, with a splayed hearth and a bread oven to the right. The hall contains two chamfered oak cross beams, while the lower room has a fireplace with an additional bread oven and a 20th-century oak lintel.
