Description

The stable block located to the north-east of Whiteway House is a structure likely dating from the early 18th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. It is built from garden wall bond brick, which is colourwashed and rendered on the north-west elevation, and features a slate roof that is gabled at the west end and hipped and rounded at the east end. There is one rear lateral stack. The stable block is positioned at an angle to Whiteway House and was connected to it until approximately 20 years ago, when some demolition occurred at the north-east corner of the house.

Originally, the stable block was a symmetrical seven-bay range with a rounded end next to the archway leading into the stable yard. However, a large garage was added in one end, disrupting the symmetry of the north-west elevation. The building is single-storey with a loft above. The front has seven bays, with the left end rounded. The centre bay features a two-storey gabled projecting porch with an outer segmental doorway, while the inner doorway is blocked. Above the porch is a Diocletian window with a central sash. To the left of centre, there are three 16-pane sashes with thick glazing bars, and one similar sash to the right of centre. The two right-hand sashes have been replaced by a large garage opening. The left end includes a plank doorway with a rectangular fanlight and a small loft loading door.

Inside, some of the old loosebox partitions have been incorporated into new internal partitions. Despite the 20th-century alterations, this stable block remains an important feature in the landscape surrounding Whiteway House.
