Description

CHUDLEIGH SX 88 SE 1/11 Cider barn at Hamlyns

GV II

Cider barn. Probably C18. Stone rubble and cob, partly rendered and whitewashed; hipped thatched roof using reed grown on site. L plan. The larger block is built against the slope of the land on the long side providing direct access to the apple loft. The cider press below (which no longer exists) was powered by a horse or donkey turning a wheel in the open air adjacent to the apple loft. A smaller block at right angles to the main block probably provided shelter for carts collecting cider. Main block part-lofted, smaller block single storey. The smaller block has a large cart entrance and a small 2-light timber window with a timber lintel. The main block has a 2-light timber window to the loft with a timber lintel and a loft entrance on the right return. Interior Pegged collar rafter roof trusses. Thatched farmbuildings are a rare survival in the county thatched cider houses are especially uncommon. Group value with stable block.
