Description

The Thomas Balle chest tomb, located about 8 metres north-west of the tower of the Church of St Thomas, is a chest tomb from the mid-18th century made of freestone. It features a grand tall rectangular shape with a moulded plinth, panelled sides, corner balusters, and a moulded lid. The lid is adorned with finely-carved armorial bearings in relief and includes an inscription in good lettering that commemorates Thomas Balle, who died in 1749, and notes that the tomb was erected by Thomas Hussey. The chest tomb is surrounded by privet planting. Thomas Balle was the owner of Mamhead in the 18th century and is also known for erecting the obelisk nearby.
