Description
The Palm House and garden wall are located within the former kitchen garden of Mamhead House (now Dawlish College). Built probably in the mid-19th century, the palm house was converted into a dwelling in the late 20th century. It is constructed of whitewashed and rendered material with a slate roof, hipped at the ends, originally with a flat roof concealed behind a parapet. The building is rectangular and was originally open to the roof with an arcaded glazed front. The exterior features two storeys and five bays, with giant pilasters flanking rounded openings that have moulded arches springing from plain caps. Lower-tier openings are square-headed, and all openings are now glazed. Four round-headed attic dormers, added in the 1980s, interrupt the original moulded cornice of the parapet. A tall brick garden wall runs to the east, returning to the south. The southern section of the wall is ramped, and it terminates in a square brick pier topped with a stone urn. The interior has not been inspected. Despite alterations, the building retains an impressive appearance, contributing to the group value with other features, including Brinshill and the terrace walls.
