Description

Three ranges of farm buildings and a stone wall form the farmyard immediately to the north-east of Crablake Farmhouse. The buildings date from 1845, as indicated by a datestone, with some adaptations from the late 20th century. They are constructed of ashlar masonry with granite dressings and feature slate roofs. The farmyard is designed with a south-facing barn that includes a threshing loft, although the horse engine house at the rear has been demolished.

At the front left, there is a linhay that is positioned at right angles to the barn, with a shippon likely located opposite. The fourth side of the yard is defined by a low stone wall that connects the shippon and linhay. The barn is a striking two-storey structure with a hipped roof at both ends, featuring a central loft entrance with a sloping slate roof supported by granite corbels, and a blocked entrance below that has a keystone. It has four loft openings and two ground floor doorways, both with keystones, as well as a ventilation slit on the ground floor to the left.

The linhay has a loft and was originally weather-boarded, but 20th-century alterations have resulted in part of the building being open fronted on the ground floor. The shippon also has a loft and includes a large doorway with a keystone to the left of centre, three ground floor windows with keystones, two first floor windows, and two first floor ventilation slits. Overall, this collection of well-crafted farm buildings displays superior detail and forms a cohesive group with the farmhouse situated immediately to the south.
