Description

These lime kilns, located about 40 metres southeast of Glen Cottage, were likely built in the mid to late 19th century. Constructed from local grey limestone rubble, they are situated in Palace Quarry. The kilns form a large rectangular block of limestone rubble, with a track leading to the top. Each of the three exposed sides features a swallow with a rounded arch. The entrance on the west side opens into a long tunnel with subsidiary niches along the side walls. It is unclear whether this structure consists of one or multiple kilns; however, the top is heavily overgrown, and at least one kiln remains operational. This impressive structure is clearly part of a large-scale enterprise.
