Description

The cottage in the farmyard at Tuckett's Farm is a disused building, likely dating from the early 18th century. It features whitewashed plastered cob on stone rubble footings, with part of the front wall rebuilt in concrete block. The cottage has a projecting red sandstone stack at the right end with a brick shaft and a thatched roof that has a plain ridge, half-hipped at the left end and gabled at the right end.

This building has a perfectly intact one-room plan and is situated in the farmyard. The front door is located to the left of center, away from the stack, with a stair against the left end wall leading directly to the undivided first floor room. There is a small thatched lean-to at the left end, which may have served as a wood store.

The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical one-window front. The plank front door, which has a timber lintel, is positioned to the left of center. The cottage features 18th-century casements with diamond leaded panes: a four-light casement for the ground floor room, a two-light casement for the first floor, and another two-light casement on the left return that lights the stair. There are pigeon holes under the eaves, one of which has been reduced in size and may have originally been a bee bole.

Inside, the cottage is remarkably complete, featuring a fireplace with a timber chimneypiece, closely spaced exposed ceiling beams that are unplastered between, and a timber stair. Although there is no access to the apex of the roof, it is almost certain that the original roof structure still exists. This cottage is an extremely rare example of an unaltered, single-cell 18th-century farm cottage in a farmyard, representing a building type that was once common but is now scarce. It is part of a notable group of Vernacular Revival and traditional thatched buildings at Tuckett's Farm.
