Description
The former stable at Tuckett's Farm is a building likely dating from the 18th century. It features whitewashed plastered cob on stone rubble footings and has a thatched roof with a plain ridge, hipped at the left end and extending down as a catslide over a cartshed at the right end. The stable is rectangular in plan, with the ground floor divided into loose boxes, while the loft was adapted into a children's playroom around 1900. It is unclear if the building was originally constructed as a stable, and the lean-to cartshed is a later addition.
The exterior is single-storey with a loft. The south elevation includes a loft loading door in the center, a blocked window on the ground floor with a timber lintel, a slit window in the cob to the left, and another slit window with a timber lintel to the right. The cartshed features large double doors made of rough planks with strap hinges. The north elevation, partly covered by ivy, has a loft loading door, a window to the left, and a small window to the left of center, along with evidence of a large blocked doorway.
Inside, the ground floor is cobbled and equipped with a drain, loose boxes, timber troughs, and hay racks. The loft retains its pegged collar rafter roof trusses and has not been altered since its adaptation as a children's playroom around 1900. It includes several simple, clever devices for children's play, such as a notched post for climbing to the roof trusses, an old canvas hammock suspended between two trusses, and a cider barrel with the ends removed, serving as a chute for children to drop onto bales of hay. The building is noted for its significance as part of a remarkable group of Vernacular Revival and traditional thatched structures at Tuckett's Farm.
