Description

Bickham Farmhouse is a farmhouse that served as the home farm to Bickham House. It was described as "rebuilt" in 1738, according to information from the owner. The roof was raised and the thatch was replaced with pantiles in the 1980s. The building is constructed of red sandstone and features a tiled roof that is gabled at both ends, with two rear lateral stacks, one of which projects. The plan consists of a long single depth range that is four rooms wide, with the left-hand room converted from a woodstore that has a granary above it. There are two entrances: one to the left of center and one to the right of center leading into a passage.

The exterior has a long asymmetrical front with six windows that are regularly spaced. There is a gabled timber trellis porch at the left-hand door and a long 19th-century lean-to brick porch to the right of center, which is gabled at the front. The windows are a set of three-light 18th or 19th-century small-pane timber casements, except for the ground floor left window (the former woodstore), which has a 19th-century timber casement.

Inside, the kitchen features a tiled floor, a roughly chamfered crossbeam, and two adjacent fireplaces, including a corner fireplace in the room next to the kitchen. The farmhouse remains largely unspoiled and has group value with the farm building to the west. A photograph from around 1910, held by the current occupier, shows the building with a thatched roof.
