Description
Stuart Lodge is a house, likely dating from the late 17th century, with renovations in the 20th century. It is built of whitewashed rendered stone rubble and cob, with a thatched roof, half-hipped at the left end and hipped at the right. A projecting front stack contains a bread oven, and there is a rear lateral stack. The plan is of a single-depth range with heated rooms to the left and right, divided by an entrance hall at the front and an unheated room at the rear.
The house is set with an end elevation to the street. The front has two storeys and two windows, with a 20th-century thatched porch to the right of centre. The ground floor has two single-light casements, and the first floor has one two-light casement. The left end (facing the street) has a four-light first-floor casement and a 19th or 20th-century ground floor oriel on timber brackets, with casement windows and glazing bars. The rear elevation includes one ground floor and one first-floor window.
Inside, the left-hand room has exposed crossbeams and joists, an open fireplace with an iron lintel and sandstone jambs, and a bread oven. The roof was not inspected.
