Description
The former kennels and adjoining cottage, located about 135 metres northwest of Pennycombe Farmhouse, are outbuildings that are believed to have served as kennels and a kennel-keeper's cottage for the Trehill Estate. They date from the early 19th century and are constructed of red sandstone. The kennels feature a slate roof that is gabled at both ends, with a slate-roofed ventilator running the entire length of the building. The cottage also has a slate roof, which is gabled on the left side and hipped on the right end, complete with an axial stack.
The layout consists of two ranges at right angles to each other, forming an L shape. The kennels have been adapted for modern agricultural use and now function as a single space. The cottage is a small, single-depth structure with a central door. Both buildings are single-storey. The kennels has a new doorway at one end, along with two smaller blocked doors and a blocked window above. There are breather openings in the side walls, each framed with neat cut stone architraves, and the roof ventilator is louvred on both sides. The cottage features a 19th-century plank and cover strip front door with a slated porch hood, as well as four three-light windows with 19th-century casements that include iron glazing bars.
The interior of the cottage has not been inspected, but the kennels are noted to have a 19th-century queen post and strut roof, which is said to be made of chestnut. The buildings also have group value with the former mill building nearby.
