Description

ILSINGTON SX 87 88 8/88 Milestone on south-east side of - the old A38, about 40 metres north-east of Saddlecombe (formerly Holbrook) Farm Gate - II

Milestone. Early or mid C19. Stone, (a hard stone, probably not granite or limestone). Oblong-section stone with rounded top, the latter slightly chamfered on the front edge; both top and sides have horizontal tooling. Inscription carved on front face, badly chipped in 1984, reads: From (A)sh(bu)rton IV Miles. Sources: 6-inch OS Map, 1963. Information from owner of Saddlecombe Farm.
